Considered by many to be an undesirable lawn weed, Henbit creates carpets of lavendar when it blooms in early Spring. It appears to occur mostly in thin or closely-mowed lawns, and in bare spots.  I have seen it covering entire crop fields.  It isn't especially pretty up close, but I find it lovely in large patches.

Henbit's flowers are nearly identical to Dead Nettle, but they are easy to distinguish by their leaves. Henbit's leaves are round, with blunt teeth. Its upper leaves, where the flowers are located, clasp the stem, while the lower leaves have stalks.
